Renovation of Industrial Complex
The site: The ex-industrial complex “Anthos”, located in the outskirts of Nafplio, was built in 1936 as a testimony of industrialization of the greater area.
The existing complex: An enclosed typology, with simple geometric stone building blocks, large industrial windows, pure roof form by wood and metal and a chimney are the physical evidence of a former active life with a strong identity.
The program: Exhibition spaces, library, auditorium, creative workshops, cafe and a gift shop.
The sustainability approach: The existing stone masonry is preserved, while contemporary materials are used to fill the grouts among the stones and the internal surfaces. Each building is autonomous in operation and the whole complex has been optimized for saving energy in relation to uses and occupants. Trees, green and bare earth surfaces, permeable materials and water areas enhance the cooling effect of evaporation and air temperature is reduced. The whole design emphasizes on appropriate internal and external comfort levels for the users and minimizing the impact on the environment.
